“They just raised me to always keep a smile on my face no matter what. I never let nobody bring me down no matter what’s going on in life. I always try to uplift people.”

About Anthony Edwards

Anthony Edwards might be known as much for his dynamic personality as he is for his dynamic play on the basketball court. “Ant-Man” is generally a pretty hilarious guy. From naming his dog Anthony Edwards Jr to using a flip phone to professing expertise at any and every sport… he’s funny and charismatic.

Edwards gives a lot of the credit for his personality to his grandmother (and his mother) who helped turn him from a self-proclaimed “mean kid” to the guy we see today. In an interview, he said, “They just raised me to always keep a smile on my face no matter what. I never let nobody bring me down no matter what’s going on in life. I always try to uplift people.”

Despite his happy demeanor, he has been through a lot in his life. Ant man’s father was never really in the picture. When he was in 8th grade, he had to go through the horrible ordeal of losing both his mother and grandmother within just 8 months. Those two meant the world to him and he has talked on multiple occasions how the impact they had (and still have) on him today. He wears the number 5 on his jersey to honor his mother and grandmother who both died on the 5th of the month just 8 months apart.

After Edwards lost his mom and grandmother, his brother and sister were able to legally adopt him. When he talked about this he said, “I hold my family as tight as I can because we lost our mom and grandma. So, like, my sister and brother, they came together, like, listen, we’re going to stick together and get through this. We just all locked in and stayed together.” Then his brother and sister helped raise him and he is very close with them.

Anthony Edwards Basketball Career

Anthony Edwards excelled at football at a young age and thought that football was going to be the sport he could play professionally. Even at a young age, he was known as one of the top football players in Georgia. In different interviews, he has mentioned different reasons for deciding to play basketball. He has said it was after the first time he dunked he knew basketball was for him, he mentioned after getting hit hard in football he didn’t want to get seriously hurt, and he has said he just enjoyed basketball better.

After a successful high school career that finished at Holy Spirit Preparatory School Edwards was a top 5 recruit by all of the major recruiting services. He ultimately decided to stay close to home and attend the University of Georgia. In interviews back in ’19, he said that he did it for two main reasons. First, his family was there and his sister had just had a baby. The second reason was that Tom Crean was the coach of Georgia and Anthony Edwards two favorite players (Dwayne Wade & Victor Oladipo) both played for Tom Crean. He liked how both those players came in not very highly rated but were highly sought after, high draft picks when they left.

Edwards played just one season at Georgia where he averaged 19 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists. He earned second-team All-SEC honors and was voted freshman of the year in the SEC. He was also a finalist for the Jerry West award which is for the best shooting guard in the country. After that one season, Edwards declared for the NBA draft.

Edwards was drafted in the 2020 NBA draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves with the 1st overall pick. He had a strong rookie year in the NBA averaging 19 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists. Anthony Edwards was second in the rookie of the year voting and was named to the All-Rookie First Team. In that rookie year, he became the 3rd youngest player to ever score 40+.

Edwards’s second year in the NBA saw him lead the Timberwolves into the playoffs. Over 72 games he averaged 21 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists. He also improved his shooting in all categories from his rookie year.

A leader in the making

Though still a very young player, Anthony Edwards is showing great leadership. His teammates seem to love him and like he learned from his mother and grandmother, he doesn’t look to bring people down, he looks to lift them up.

Even before he was in the NBA, he showed his leadership and the way he puts others first. The night before his official college visit, Ant-man called an assistant at the school to ask if he could bring one of his high school teammates on his college visit. The assistant coach assumed it was just trying to bring a friend on a trip to get some free stuff or to get to go to a party. But Edwards explained: It was Christmas break, and “this kid is from Eastern Europe and he just doesn’t have anywhere to go, and I don’t want him being by himself.”
A recent example was how quick he is to give credit to Jaden McDaniels.

Numerous other examples show Edwards is a true teammate and leader
