Offense/Scoring

2 man fast break drill –lay-up

This drill is done with two players. The larger of the players (bigger guard, forward, or center) tosses the ball of the backboard on one hoop and then rebounds it. He then throws an outlet pass to the guard who is on either sideline. The guard dribbles toward the top of the key, making a move at a cone or defender at approximately half court, then jumps stop at a cone or defender at the top of the key. After the bigger player throws the outlet pass he sprints down the sideline that he outleted the ball to, stopping at the 3 point line on the wing to receive a pass from the point guard. The bigger player then drives toward the basket and stops using a 2-step. After the point guard passes to the bigger player, he fills in to the 3 point line as the bigger player drives. Finally, after completing the 2-step, the bigger player pivots, and kicks to the guard for a 3 point shot.

2 man fast break drill – fill for 3

This drill is done with two players. The larger of the players (bigger guard, forward, or center) tosses the ball of the backboard on one hoop and then rebounds it. He then throws an outlet pass to the guard who is on either sideline. The guard dribbles toward the top of the key, making a move at a cone or defender at approximately half court, then jumps stop at a cone or defender at the top of the key. After the bigger player throws the outlet pass he sprints down the sideline that he passed the ball to, stopping at the 3 point line on the wing to receive a pass from the point guard. The bigger player then drives toward the hoop and scores.

Cross-court + finish

Set up cones parallel to the baseline 6-8 feet from the basket. Starting in the middle of the paint, dribble laterally (parallel to the baseline) toward the sideline until you reach the out of bounds line. Upon reaching the sideline, make an explosive move, (through the legs, behind the back, etc.) turning back toward the middle of the court. Dribble hard back towards where you started, but when you reach the middle of the court shoot a running floater.

Mikans with contact

Perform the traditional “Mikan” drill with contact from a defender throughout the drill.

Triple move shooting/finishing

Set up 3 cones in a staggered fashion (this can vary but they should resemble some sort of triangle) Perform 3 moves at different cones before taking an elbow jumper, finishing with a floater, or finishing hard at the basket.

Full court moves + shoot/finish

Set up 3 cones in a staggered fashion (approximately at one three point line, half court, and the other 3 point line) Peform 3 moves at different cones before taking an elbow jumper, finishing with a floater, or finishing hard at the basket.

Sprint, screen, cut, finish

Sprint from right elbow to a cone/chair at the foul line. Jump stop & set screen, pause for 2 seconds, quickly explode around chair, catch pass, and finish.

Flash and finish

Flash from block to middle (use a chair if available), finish with various post moves, hook shots, etc.), get your own rebound and outlet to the passer.

Power put backs

Two defenders stand between one offensive player and the basket. The offensive player tosses the ball off the backboard then jumps up to rebound it. The defenders allow him to do this, but then double team him in an attempt to stop him from scoring. On the flip side, once the offensive player rebounds the ball, he must try to score on the two defenders.

Slide, backpedal, score

One player stands on the sideline at foul line level in a defensive stance facing the baseline. The player slides from sideline to elbow, then back. Upon returning to the sideline the player will closeout on the other play, than begin to backpedal as fast as they can. As they begin this, a coach or another player throws a basketball (or tennis ball to any location on the court, and the player has to get to the ball and catch it in the air by any means necessary). At this point the player catches the ball and must try to score on the hoop that he started near. The player/coach who threw the ball will play defense.

Narrow 1-on-1

This requires 2 defenders and one offensive player. One defender at half court one on the ball. Use cones to narrow the court (or only use half of the court) to a width of about 15 feet. The offensive player must score a full court basket without going out of the allotted space.
